Accepting the Social Media Revolution

Times Are A-Changing
Bobby Bowden is retiring. Wow. It’s like the end of a great era. I grew up watching him lead the Florida State Seminoles to victory and it’s hard to imagine he won’t be coaching my alma mater anymore. But I guess things change and I have to accept that there will still be great college football even without him. Just like there is still great advertising today even though the landscape has drastically changed over the years.
Many things change regardless if we like it, agree with it, want it, or even think we need it. It’s a fact of life. The way we advertise and market has definitely changed. It’s changed a lot, actually. Remember when radio, print, billboards and TV ruled the advertising world. And it wasn’t until recently that that all changed. The Internet came around and changed the face of advertising forever. And the crazy thing is that it’s still evolving and changing every day. Email, interactive banners and pay-per-click ads once ruled the online advertising world, but it seems social media has taken the reigns.
It’s a change that not everyone has wanted to accept, but it’s a change that we must accept. Every day, more and more people create Facebook profiles, join Twitter, buy iPhones, write blogs, make videos, and post them to YouTube. Companies have to come to terms with the facts and reach people where they are today, not where they were 5, 10, or even 15 years ago.
Don’t call it “jumping on the bandwagon”, because it’s not. It’s called doing the right thing by joining the digital revolution, because you want to effectively reach your target in a time when economically it’s so important. And like I have to learn to accept the loss of the great Bobby Bowden, you should learn to accept the evolution of social media and what it can do for you. Jump on… now before it’s too late!
