Top 10 Internet Marketing Tips from SES Chicago 2009
Well I have fully returned and recovered from the Search Engine Strategies (SES) Chicago conference. By recovered, I unfortunately do not mean by information overload like the recovery that took place when I attended SMX West in February. By recovered, I mean from the cold. See, I live in Florida and have not experienced cold like Chicago COLD since my years in college living at home in Ohio. But waking up to a white Christmas I have to admit was one of the most exciting things about SES Chicago.
Read on to learn the best SEO and Social Media tips from the sessions I attended at the conference.
1. YouTube video rankings are based on text descriptions, number of hits, and rankings. The more descriptive and relevant they are, the more they will get viewed. The more popular they are means the higher in the results pages they will go! Did you know 20 hours of video are uploaded every minute to YouTube?
2. YouTube has a keyword suggestion tool.
3. Embedding videos on websites, in blogs, and social media is the secret sauce to viewership.
4. Do you have a press release you want to get out in the community besides through PRWeb and the wire? Send your release to the top influencer bloggers that already rank for a keyword you are targeting as well as top Tweeters on the topic. Check out Klout and see who the top influence tweeters are in your industry.
5. Have a presentation you want to share? Upload it to Slideshare.
6. Idek shortens your URLs and even tracks them for you! This is a good tool to use to see how many people click on a link and retweet it.
7. Your website should be designed by your website visitors not HIPPOS (High Paid Persons of Opinion). I knew this already but it just cracked me up!
8. Always add client logos to a landing page or “as seen on…”, or “serving 70,000 people…”- this builds trust with your visitors.
9. Have an e-commerce site? Add to your receipt the ability for the purchaser to share their purchase with friends, along with a $x off coupon- who doesn’t want to pass off deals to their friends?
10. Are you having trouble getting a page ranked for a specific keyword? Utilize blended search! Create a Flickr account, upload a video, or send out a news release. Appearing in multiple mediums also equals more trust for your brand.
11. And a bonus line that also cracked me up… “Keyword stuffing is not black hat SEO, it is retarded.”

Lisa,
Thanks for sharing. These are some great takeaways.
While I’m based in Chicago and was at SES Chicago 2008, I wasn’t able to make it this year.
If the cold didn’t scare you away forever, you should stop by the Ifbyphone office next time you’re in Chicago.
