We’ve heard it time and time again; good communication is key to any relationship whether professional or personal.

To ensure your communication is opening doors for you as opposed to closing them, follow these simple key rules.

Be open to communicate – Many times there are things we need to talk about that are hard topics which can lead to difficult conversations. When you are open to communicating you are much more approachable and people won’t fear having to talk to you about difficult items.

Listen – Do you ever get the feeling when you are talking to a person that not only are they not listening to you but they are just waiting for their next moment to speak? To fully understand the communication you must listen. This is key to understanding what the other person is trying to communicate to you. If you don’t understand what they’ve said, politely ask them to further explain.

Be positive – This is similar to being open to communicate with a fundamental difference. The communication should be positive and avoid negative statements or questions. For example instead of saying, “I can’t help you unless you speak slower” try saying, “Could you please speak slower to better help you.”

Solution oriented – 7 times out of 10 when people communicate it is to find a solution to an issue or a problem they are having. Therefore it is best to be solution oriented when engaging in these types of conversations. After listening and understanding what a person has communicated to you, next think to yourself, how can I help? What solutions can I provide to help this person? This will lead to not only a positive encounter but a productive one also.
