The Successor to Internet Protocol Version 4
Cisco and Verizon Business have just announced that they will be joining World IPv6 Day. This is a 24 hour trial of IPv6 internet protocol. The Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the successor to Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). The Internet Protocol (IP) allows all computers to talk to other computers on the internet. It is a numeric identifier that is the underlying address of every service and website on the internet. Cisco and Verizon will be joined by Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Akamai and others to offer their services over IPv6. It is a chance to test this updated protocol on the main Internet. The reason the Internet needs to switch over to IPv6 is the number of unassigned IPv4 addresses is running out. IPv6 will provide the world with a nearly inexhaustible supply of address and allow the Internet to continue to grow.
